SOHH Over It!

Madonna…and Harold and Kumar

May 20, 2008 jaedalaurez

Okay, here’s the link to Madonna’s new CD, Hard Candy:

Saw the new Harold and Kumar…not as funny as the first, but still pretty funny…including this scene where Kumar accuses this light-skinned airport security of being racist, the guy responds “How am I being racist- I’m black”, and Kumar tells him he’s barely brown, and keeps calling him Matthew Perry.

Anyway, my question is- how does the discussion on racism change when talking to another minority as opposed to somebody white? And do you believe black folk can be racist?

‘And do you believe black folk can be racist?’

Depends on how technical you want to get.

    Prejudice, hell yes.

But a smarty pants negro will tell you that blacks can’t be racist because racism requires a power infrastructure behind it, and blacks lack that power.

    Semantics.

    And on the Madonna.

‘Kumar tells him he’s barely brown’

He was light though, like Jennifer Beals light.

Between that and the cockmeat sandwich, I almost died.

But althought I see the argument about racism vs. predjudice…I don’t know how much power I would assume one absorbs from the surrounding infrastructure if you are still able to treat me like shit based on my race…

It’s like having someone from a 3rd world country saying that we are rich and privileged based on our being "American" when clearly some of us have it better than others.

Basically, the assumption is based on a generalization of circumstances- you are "_____", therefore, regardless of how shitty I treat you personally, it’s okay, because collectively, "your people" have power.

Which is something I don’t agree with.
