See even if I wasn’t from the Bay, I would have respected Hammer…that nigga might have been corny at times, but he was definitely hip hop.

Many of our favorite rappers used gimmicks to get it poppin. People hate to admit that shit, but the WU lived off the martial arts gimmick for a minute, and No Limit lived off that soldier gimmick. Kris Kross was a gimmick, but Hammer was a nigga who liked to dance and entertain. Now when he was trying to act all hard, that shit was a gimmick.

Truth be told, a lot of niggas from the Bay HATED him because he wasn’t rappin that same shit Too $hort was or NWA was, but he did more for them Oakland niggas than any rapper ever did.

(Meanwhile, if you guys get a chance, listen to http://www.flow935.com on Tuesday after 10pm- they usually have Canadian hip hop artists like JD Era or Drake or lesser known Americam artists like Little Brother in the studio for interviews and freestyling…it’s a good listen)

Well, at least for them, they were more concerned about the fact that that is all you hear these days- 90% of what you hear on the radio is “my Lipgloss is poppin”or “superman that hoe” or some other randomness from Young Joc (Coffeeshop, anybody? yick) or the like.

They were more concerned about the generation gap and (according to them), the idea that black entertainers do not support older consumers…yes, when I was 16 or 17, it would have been cool to Cupid Shuffle, Crank dat, and Joc my way across the prom dance floor, but there are 35 and 40 year olds who find themselves pushed out of the market who still love hip hop, but find less and less to listen to.

    Which is a valid concern…

In the new XXL, Primo asked ‘Face if he thinks there’s a market for more contemporary hip hop artists like it is in other genres (Rolling Stones, U2, etc). Face answered “no…we don’t support our artists enough”

Which is why you’re gonna see artists like LL making more street records, the real reason why Jay became inspired to make a record about hustling, and other artists fading away. I used to think the genre would grow with its artists, but it’s not lookin that way.

I thought it was ironic that Phonte was even showcased on the BET hip hop awards when they can’t even get their videos played on the network.

MIMS: “I can make a mil doing nothing on a track”

All labels are doing now is looking for that quick fix-a couple of singles to tide niggas over, and they throw MCs away. Ringtone rap has replaced the oversaturation of gangsta rap in the 90s.

I think the Roots are the only ‘contemporary’ HIPHOP group that will survive…Fugees coulda, but we all know what happened there.

    We gone over this before…

but HIPHOP and other forms of music are different in how the artists tour.

You MUST have a live show that consists of more that just you, a hypeman, and a DJ.

Jay-Z might be able to pull it off by doing his shows with live instrumentation, like he did on Letterman.

Kanye is steppin his game up with his live shows, so maybe he could extend his career over the long term?

Because there are MCs who stay true to being an MC, they have a chance. Snoop tours year round and so does The Roots, and Jay puts on a helluva show. Kanye’s learning because he has the biggest ego…

The vets understand that is where the money is, but also the importance of being able to put on a show. These new niggas have so few songs, they won’t be able to do a tour-even the Scream tours had to put established artists to headline.

The problem is that Dre had talented artists like Snoop and DPG on his tracks. B.I.G. dies, and the one seriously credible MC that could bring substance to those tracks isn’t around. He would throw all the Mases and Yung Jocs back if he could have B.I.G. again to put them verses over Hitmen tracks.

Some of the more soulful tracks were from the Hitmen…I laughed when Jay said Diddy was basically listening to these tracks while he walked around in his house shoes…

Which is why I need the instrumentals…I might make a picture to the soundtrack!

Naw, Prince is about his paper.

Although I would like the chance to talk to him and make him reconsider…

some of the DOPEST shit ever was on Youtube.

some of the rarest of rare Prince performances.

I think if he heard directly from a fan he might change his tune.

Nah….Bleek and probably Ty Ty are in the backseat in the video. It’s supposed to follow Jay on the come up in BK…which would make sense as to why there were no young Dame and Biggs in it, but it still would be cool to see them at 40/40 poppin bottles.

See I’m lost. I was thinking that the kids in the car are the young versions of Jay, Diddy and Nas - so I went wrong with that. Lil dude was so Diddy-fied I just knew he was a young Sean Combs even thought I know they didn’t start out together.

Okay now I get it but where is Bleek? Was he in the video?
