Man says he felt compelled to help family of Bell in racially charged La. case

NEW ORLEANS - When a 17-year-old at the center of a civil rights controversy in a small Louisiana town left jail, he had a stranger to thank.
Dr. Stephen Ayers, who lives about 135 miles away, said he felt compelled to help the family of Mychal Bell by posting the teen’s bond and allowing him to go home for the first time in 10 months.
Bell is one of six black teenagers accused of beating a white classmate in the central Louisiana town of Jena, where more than 20,000 demonstrators gathered last week to protest what they perceive as differences in how black and white suspects are treated.
Ayers, 42, of Lake Charles in southwestern Louisiana, said Friday that he isn’t politically active and isn’t usually one to “get into things like this.” But then a patient whose feet hurt after the march gave him a report on the event, in which Ayers did not participate.
“I was concerned about what was going on up there and thought the district attorney was a bit harsh in his treatment of Mr. Bell,” said Ayers, who is black but added that his race was not his motivation. “I really thought it was overkill.”
Stranger posted $5,400
Bell was released from custody Thursday on $45,000 bail after District Attorney Reed Walters announced that he would abandon adult charges against him. Ayers posted $5,400, the required 12 percent bond set by a judge Thursday.
Bell was 16 when he and five other black Jena High School students were arrested in December and charged with kicking Justin Barker, a white student, after knocking him unconscious.
Five of the six students, including Bell, initially were charged with attempted murder, but the charges against Bell and three others later were reduced to aggravated second-degree battery. The case against the sixth youth is sealed in juvenile court.
Bell had faced as many as 15 years in prison on his battery conviction last month, but a state appeals court tossed the conviction out, ruling that juveniles can’t be tried as adults on battery charges.
The teen is due back in court Tuesday for the first hearing in his juvenile case. Meanwhile, one of Bell’s lawyers said she him to start looking for a new school and possibly a new place to live.
The attorney, Carol Powell Lexing, said that leaving Jena, where his parents live, is for Bell’s “safety and welfare.”
“Right now, it’s not a good environment for him to be in,” she said, adding that Bell’s family members have received threatening letters.
Bell’s lawyer thanks stranger
Lexing, who called Ayers a “good Samaritan,” said she thanked the doctor over the phone. Many people offered to donate money for Bell’s bail, but Lexing said they accepted Ayers’ help because he and a friend, Lawrence Morrow, were willing to handle the logistics.
Morrow, a magazine publisher and host of local radio and television shows, met Lexing when he went to Jena for Thursday’s march. Morrow went home to Lake Charles with swollen feet, so he called his friend and family doctor for a prescription.
Ayers asked him about the march and offered to help Bell and his legal team. “He said, ’Whatever the cost is, go get him out,”’ Morrow recalled.
Ayers said he isn’t helping Bell because he thinks he is innocent.
“What he did was in no way right, and he should be punished for this,” he said. “We’re not condoning his behavior. We’re just saying he needs to be punished appropriately.”

Vick reportedly tests positive for marijuana

Just one day after an additional indictment in a state court on dogfighting charges, a federal judge in Virginia on Wednesday imposed stricter release conditions on suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick after he tested positive for marijuana use, NBC News reported.
Vick, who pleaded guilty in August to a federal dogfighting charge, is awaiting sentencing on Dec. 10. Vick and three co-defendants face of up to five years in prison on the federal charges.
Probation officer, Patricia Locket-Ross, petitioned Judge Henry E. Hudson to impose stricter pretrial release conditions on Vick after he submitted a urine sample on September 13, which tested positive for marijuana.
Today Judge Hudson ordered that Vick submit to any method of testing, “for determining whether the defendant is using a prohibited substance.” Hudson also ordered the suspended football star to be restricted to his Virginia residence everyday from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. This home confinement, said the judge in a court filing, “will include electronic monitoring.” He ordered Vick to pick up the bill for the service. And the judge ordered him to continue in a substance therapy program and participate in mental health counseling.
Yesterday Vick and the three co-defendants were indicted again, this time on state charges stemming from their operation of a dogfighting ring at Vick’s property in Virginia.
A grand jury in Surry County, Va., indicted Vick on one count of beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs and one count of engaging in or promoting dogfighting.
He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted, time that could be served in addition to the 12 to 18 months he is expected to receive in December as a result of his guilty plea on similar charges in federal court.

BET had a town hall meeting on HipHop with some very interesting panel members. Michael E. Dyson, Master P, Nelly, Benny Boom, Al Sharpton & TI to name a few…
Let me tell you that Nelly, TI and Master P held it down for all the hiphop heads. They held it down through humor, intellect and plain old common sense.
At one point someone said that music went from the Supremes to NWA - Nelly said when does music ditact our lively hood or our lives. It’s not when music is right, black people are right - it’s when education and opportunity is right black people are right.
***Fact check*** Can’t compare Supremes with NWA:
The Supremes very highly dignified on the surface - then we had EnVogue classy but subtle in there sex appeal - then we had Destiny’s Child - fun, classy, and somewhat trashy (i.e. lapdance at BET awards) - So my take is how does Black America want it? It’s okay for a female group to show what the elites consider “trashy behavior” on tv during primetime but if a man raps about he is the villian…I don’t drink kool-aid.
A Black female journalist from Essence stated that she does not think every song needs to be about killing, sex, drugs and money.

Oh it’s okay that Denzel can play rogue police officer, taking bribes, killing people and dealing drugs. But if I sing about that same situation it’s wrong? Hmmmmmm… Scarface can shoot up amigos left and right, snort cocaine til the tip of his toes are white, but I can’t sing about such things b/c there is no way they happen in real life? Master P stated that the things he used to do he does not do anymore therefore he does not have the need to even rap or speak about it anymore. He had a hustle, he was killing, drug dealing & stealing - he decided he did not want to die in the hood - so he got a new hustle - music - he did whatever necessary to get out of the hood and once he made it out and made enough money to just chill he didn’t have to do that anymore. He said that TIP and Nelly are growing up and hip hop and the longer they are in it the more they will change but they have to right to bring their stories to you however they see fit. FREEDOM OF SPEECH is a bad byatch!
I feel that I am a grown ass woman and if I want to hear nigga, bitch and ho all day - that is my right. But my child is forbidden from it - will she hear it somewhere else, probably so but if hearing it makes her turn our like her mama - then I am cool. Dre’s “The Chronic” didn’t make me wanna smoke (I was alread testing around), Ice-T’s “Cop Killer” didn’t make me wanna shoot anyone, it was all art to me and still is. Grow up America.
In closing I was telling my family that I think the Black community has their priorities mixed up. The denegration of society stems more from the lackluster educational system, the failing job market, the gap between rich and poor more so than hiphop.
