SOHH Over It!

Guess Who’s Back?

May 30, 2007 Keesha AKA KSH

I been on a Memorial Day Hiatus. I caught this lil story on another blog site called brownsista.com - I don't think it is 100% true but I do think it hold a lot of merit. As I am working on my Masters I have been toying with a million topics about race and pop culture - this is one that caught my eye and could be a possible candidate for one of my topics.

What's your take?

No Black Women Here Fellow blogger Clay Kane wrote an interesting piece on his site that got me to thinking about an article I started writing some months ago but eventually abandoned. Clay, in his article, wonders why there are so few Black women on the Billboard charts but quite a few White women who have what I like to call that Black Girl Flava? Now some time ago I predicted that the influx of White women into r&b music, with the help of Black male producers, would lead to the demise of Black women on the charts. And now that the chickens have essentially come home to roost, I think now is the perfect time to talk about why only Beyonce and Corrine Bailey Rae- who is biracial- are the only two so called Black women who have songs in the Hot 100.

Now the first thing we are going to have to do is realize that the replacement of Black women on the charts is linked to the replacement of Black women in other areas as well. And even though sistas many not be dominating the charts as we once did, women who sing, dance and basically have been taught to emulate us are. But I am getting a bit ahead of myself so let's go back a bit.

The replacement of Black women in our community, via it radio, television or video is nothing new. Just think about BET which is only about 25 years. Like most Black stations it hired Black women. Naturally they were all fair, but they were at least Black. The new BET however seems to only hire Hispanic women. All the sistas have been replaced and as always- no one says a thing.

The music video is another place where you used to see Black women paired with Black men. This is natural right? Well apparently for us it is not which is why again, you see the once light-skin and occasional brown skin sista, has now been replaced with Hispanic, Asian and even White women. Don't act like you didn't notice the lack of sistas in recently released videos by Fabulous and Bobby Valentino.

Sad isn't it?

Quick question. Why can't black and brown skin men be paired with black and brown skinned women? Why does it seem the Black woman is seen as an un-natural choice to play the love interest of Black men in their videos?

Moving right along.

Print ads. I was browsing through Vibe some months ago and the hip hop clothing ads Typical Hip Hop Ad- No Black Women Here immediately popped out at me. What I noticed as always were displays of wealthy, formerly from the hood brothas, who had now made it. Making it as seen in these ads involve money, cars, a fabulous house- and a woman who doesn't look a damn thing like the man in the ad or any woman in his family. Success as it is being sold to Black males does not include Black and brown females.

Diddy's ads in particular are a clear indicator of this. The original ads for his Unforgivable fragrance showed him with not one but two women- one White the other Asian. Fame and success are once again linked to women who are not Black- and who doesn't want all the trappings of fame and success?

Rap and R n' B videos are nothing but visual dreams of the perfect Black man's life and we- Black women- are almost always absent in that dream. We have been replaced.

This leads me right back to the absence of Black women on the charts but not their style and flava. Polow da Don Coon even bragged in King Magazine that he was the first to "Take White girls to Black clubs and give them that flava". Black girl flava that is. He took them to the clubs to watch how the Black girls do it because history has show us time and time again, that White people who can emulate Black people will sell more records. Just ask Elvis and Eminem.

To keep the music thing going. Can anyone explain Amy addicted to heroin Winehouse to me? This toothless White woman has gotten ten times more press and attention on Black sites than India Arie and Heather Headley combined when they released their albums. Even an ugly White woman can get more support from Black folks than 2 dark skin Black sistas.

Yes I said it. The color issue. We never want to talk about it but we know it exists and Clay asked in his article as well if many sistas were being kept off the charts because of their brown and black coloring. I say hell yeah! and someone else seems to agree with me.

So until we can admit to ourselves that for years we have been replacing Black women with watered down multi-racial versions of other women we will never see and understand why Black women are disappearing from television, radio, print, video and everything else in between. There has always been a movement to devalue Blackness and Black women in particular. This move included exalting fair complected women to the heights of beauty in our communities. But here is the problem. Those women were only used because they resembled White women. But they are no longer needed as the real thing can now be had. So this is why not even being light skin is enough these days.

Ten years from now there won't be another Beyonce. Just as Britney Spears (before she went psycho) was catapulted to fame because she could dance Black (Y'all didn't fall for those Madonna comparisons did you? Even Britney herself admitted to cloning Janet) so shall other White artists male and female. But things always start with us. No one bats an eyelash when Black women are replaced and if Black women themselves complain they are accused of being jealous.

So sit back and let that rotate through your cerebellum for a bit. The truth hurts- but somebody has got to tell it.

I have to agree. Its been that way for a long time and for a minute there, it appeared to be getting better. You were seeing not only more black women in videos, but you were also seeing more full-figured women and even some not so attractive ones. But I think those videos stood out as markers - people were consciously making an effort to use folks not stereotypical - and before long, what I thought might be a movement just faded to black.

As far as the actual music… its been cool to be a non-black person capable of so-called ‘black associated’ things for a while now. Look at the beatbox phenomenon (no Blake).

I dunno…I see plenty of dark skinned sistas in videos…

    I mean…

And everybody acknowledges that Kelly is the ‘fine’ DC member.

But I think the point is - how much ‘credt’ is the world giving Kelly aside from all the fellas that lust after her as a beautiful woman?

Well…if she’d hurry up and drop another album, and it’s good, then maybe she’ll get some.

Being fine ain’t enough at the end of the day. Gotta move some product at some point outside of DC, or do something else.

But her skin tone isn’t the problem.

Kelly was just an example cause you brought her name up. I think its valid to say a lot of the sistas that are legitimately doing well get very little accolades for it…. but then ‘doing well’ is subject to interpretation.

Now all of a suddne there are no sistas in videos. I think I said something about this before. Black women complain about how they are being portrayed in music videos but this person writes that there are none…
    Which one is it ?
I don’t put race in everything although it does make a difference but this aint’ one of them.
R&B is going thru a phase just like hip hop is. Its not what it used to be. We used to have Women like Whitney Houston and Janet JKackson that had that crossover appeal but now all we have is Beyonce. What woman out right now can do what Whitney, Janet, Beyonce,Diana,Maria, Mary J can do. We had a couple of nice transitional artist like Brandy,Mya and Monica but they flamed out amidst turmoil. Aaliyah and Left Eye passed and all we have to show for them is Ciara ???
If you understood the change in the music business as far as artist development than this topic would not be looked at as a race issue. Instead of embracing our positive influence on white america, all we can do is complain. I hate that shit with a passion. It makes us seem like fucking crybabies. Like we can’t handel stress without playing the fucking race card. We used to have pride. Some assholes look at Xtina as a biter of R&B by saying she is TRYING TO ACT BLACK when in fact her influences in musc were majority balck so what the fuck is she supposed to sound like ? Should she sing the way she does and be influenced by Mellisa Etheridge and Madonna ?
Black people… stand on your own fucking two feet and stop asking these crackers for a fucking handout. Its bullshit like this that always makes white people look at us like we are helpless.
So the fuck what Diddy had an asian bitch in his video. Arent they people too ? Don’t they use money to buy products ?
Hasn’t anybody realized that black culture has spread beyond your fucking hood ? No one watched that Pavlik/Miranda fight to hear 70 year old Larry merchant say "the fight was gonna be crunk" ??
I hate to sound like a KKK memeber but is there any way to please these niggers ??

‘but then ‘doing well’ is subject to interpretation.’

India.Arie - second album didn’t do as well as the first - why? Shit…I dunno. I haven’t listened to it. She certainly gets industry respect for her ability. She’s not a scrub. But she’s not a pop artist either.

Tweet - ditto on her album. Why? Fucked up second half of the album + lack of label support = no love. Had a hot single, then a dumb T.V. theme…fell off the face of the earth after that. Found jesus last I knew?

Jill Scott (for a ‘thick’ example) - gets mad industry respect, but she’s not a pop artist either.

Corrine Bailey Rae is more ‘pop’ than all three of them. And more of a musician than Beyonce.(and she got the Oprah blessing). I don’t think it’s because she light skinned. She’s just different being British and all that.

But back to the post specifically (cuz I read it a second time for clarity)

Diddy made that choice on purpose to appeal to a broader market…right, wrong? I woulda had myself in those ads wit 20 different types of broads…but that’s just me.

I dont think thats the point he/she is making. I think this person is sayin that there is a preference toward ‘black substitutes’ over the real thing. Its not quintessentially a ‘race issue’ but because it has those comparison undertones, its gonna come up that way. Aint nobody marching on Washington bout this shit, but when its the topic of conversation, you cant deny there is a little bit of truth to it. More importantly, the question is do we even care that this is the case? When music is supposed to be universal, should it even matter?

Anybody who knows industry knows the power of the black dollar. White people know this even more than we do. You think Cadillac and GM have Fat Joe, Mary J,T.I. etc down with them for the fucking ambiance ?
The problem is that the black female artist we have now don’t have any star power. Thedy are fucking boring. Kelly is cute but boring. And when Kelly Rowland becomes the topic of a black artist not being able to maximize her potential that should be self explanatory. Nobody here can even name a good song by one of the Supremes not named Diana.
India Arie is strait boring and that bitch look like she don’t even use deodorant and she is supposed to be the next big thing… GTFOH.

Ima respond to this in detail
1st this ain’t about race its about money and Payola

Bottom White people Equal money in this country and it is selling out and its why so many artforms that once they reach a certain level of popularity. Black as well as white labels pretty much take it and try to incorporate white america into it to turn it into a much bigger cash cow. Its happening to Hip hop it happened to R&b, Don’t sleep dance hall will be next seeeeee Gwen Stefani who will be the next to go that route if not Fergi
Reasons are some of our Producers like Timberland don’t care about culture or presevering sht. This is a business and its going to go where the monies at. Labels are about culture they about money and awards. Tim tells ngz straight out if you not signed to me. Unless your a platinuim artist I ain’t fkin wit you and he only does music for artist that sell which is damn near the mantality of the entire industry.
I wanna sympathize but this ain’t going anywhere ever cause white america makes up 70 percent of the American population. If you think with a business mind your always gonna cater to their financial demographic

    @Dig…
"Music is supposed to be universal"…

Was that PSA part of your probation agreement…lol.

Ain’t nothing ever the way its supposed to be. All music ain’t universal. I just heard a song called "hey bebe" and ain’t nothing universal about that bullshit…lol.
You say substitutes but who are they sustituting. The only color that matter here is green and if you have to promote white people to get mre gree than thats what it is. Business knows onlyt one color… green.
If we are such a big part of the buying public, we have to ask ourselves why we don’t support our own artists. That has nothing to do with propaganda and such. We like what we like. How many of yall went out and bought a fucking Maroon 5 CD and din’t pick up that Tanks joint yet ?

Ok I think i touched on this last week… Its just how America has changed…A young Aretha Franklin Gladis Knight or Dionne Warwick couldnt sell right now cause we are so into apperance… it seems that it really does not have to do with alot of talent just the way you look. But I must say Xtina and Amy Winehouse an Joss Stone do have amazing talent… But do we forget about our own? I dont know

ihadno: Thats not me saying that, thats what ‘the world’ has been saying since the beginning of time, and the question was rhetorical. Further more, I think it is universal, but as with anything else, everything aint for everybody. Not EVERY black person gon be feeling Tank. Not EVERY white person digs Maroon 5. But for the record, I happen to have both. You can never make a blanket statement thats gon cover every base, so my point is that although there are some valid points being raised on her side of the argument as well as elsewhere, who cares?

Im not gon stop watchin videos cause there aint nobody that look like me in em. I will, however, stop watching them shits cause they all fuckin look the same, with different artists damn cut and pasted in them bitches.

Im not gon stop listening to Kelly Clarkson and Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse cause they have soulful voices thats supposed to be reserved for black people. But I will stop listening to their asses when they stop making shit that I like.

People like to oversimplify stuff when its not prudent to do so. At the end of the day, dont none of it matter cause people still gon buy, watch and listen to what they like. Period.

We got real racial issues going on here. Write about the laws that effect us. Write about race and education and how it effect us. Write about Blacks and the healthcare system.
But peppering this bullshit up there with real racial issues is a bullshit smokescreen.
WE ALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO WALK INTO ANY RECORD STORE AND BY WHAT WE WANT… PERIOD.

People wanna hate Justin because of his black influence but if that is what he grew up listening too, embrace that as black culture become more than black culture into american culture. We see these white kids waling aroubnd with their pants hanging off their asses and its just imitating what they like, we all have done it and will continue to do so. Amy Winehouse has been out for a long time. I’ve been into her ever since she performed at a Roots concert here in NY back in 03′. You can hear a person influence in theior music regardless of color. Put Justin, Neyo and Usher side by side and its obvious who there biggest influence is…. why wouold they sound different/

I think we don’t support our own for a number of reasons
1st before their was need to support anything black back in the day
we now its more of every man for him self

2nd we don’t have the same respect for artist that we used to. Before we wanted Janet to win everytime now after 2 Awards we’re sick of Beyonce
i think its cause of over exposure

    3. if you can get it cheaper at good quality, no ones gonna buy the original.
Bootlegg tapes never hurt the industry
which is why you could go gold in the hood if the album was tight
Now that we had CD’s the entire hood could love you and say your the shit. But since bootleggs and downloads no ones buyin the original no matter how dope that sht is.
When labels are deciding who to sign and who to market to. We’re no longer financially a factor cause we not supporting our own artforms in the stores and box offices.
