I Need Some Help With Something

Posted by: Chevy.Ced

I was recently asked to teach a class of teenagers (ages 13-17) on the evolution of rap/hip-hop starting next week. I have pretty much worked out an outline of what I want to teach the kids about the music for the 6 weeks I'm working with them.

What I need help with is simple. I have dozens of songs that I feel as though these kids should be familiar with. They don't have to memorize the songs, but I want them to at least know the name of the song and the artists that performed the songs. Any songs y'all think should be on that list?

Any suggestions are welcomed.

    Hmmmmmm…

    Good one.

I’d cover all decades, highlighting the ‘important’ songs from each one.

    Sugarhill Gang "Rappers Delight"

Cold Crush Brothers "Punk Rock Rap"

and explain the history between the two groups.

    The standards.

    The Message
    Planet Rock
Can I Get a Soul Clap

    all that type of ish.

Yeah I was gonna do somethings like that. I was going to have to do some ‘research’ and dig up some stuff from the late 70s and early 80s (1979-1981) music.

In my second class with them, I’m going to show them how ‘gangsta’ rap evolved from Schooly D to KRS-One to NWA to where we at now. So, the third class may take the party shit from Sugarhill Gang to where it’s at now with the hyphy and ’snap’ shit.

    Good job though.

    **EDIT**

Good shit ihadnochoice. I can’t see it at work, but when I get home I’ll check it out.
