So, I'm tryin to catch up on my HIPHOP. Tryin to find out what the real deal is on various artists. Some loved, some hated. Oh, ya'll niggaz are surely gonna debate it…I can rhyme too.
On to the business at hand.
Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
Oh now. Backpackers might wanna just kill themselves without even reading this. First of all, let me just say I fully 'understand' where Lupe is coming from in terms of the actual content of his verses. Lupe can spit. Lupe is an 'ill spitter'. We all understand each other on those points.(Sounds like Jay-Z here and there, but whatever)
Now here is where I must give the 'constructive' criticism of the album overall, and where some of you might just disagree. We can do that here and not catch feelings…right…yes?
I'm gonna leave the 'Co-Executive Producer' out of this…except to say the track featuring said person is arguably the most 'typical' sounding track on the album. Again, this probably comes down to a matter of preference and his verse isn't the hottest thing I've ever heard.
'1st and 15th, that's my cue, brew', awwwwwww whatever man.
Let me preface this by sayin (yes, the preface starts now, te he he he), I've posted Digable Planets on this very site myself. I like all types of HIPHOP. Love it. But I've just got to get it off my chest.
The album is disappointing.
Dare I say boring at some points. As good of a lyricist as Lupe is…bejeezus some parts of the album are just killin me. I don't understand it. Why?? Normally I'd blame the white man, the industry, Young Jeezy, but damn I can't even do it this time.
2. Real - I have no real problems with this song. Nice way to set it off.
3. Just Might Be Ok - The beat is tight. Loop is tight. Okay…why is that guy singin? I'm knitpicking, some of you might disagree, but the song isn't being helped by the addition of this dude. Fuckin up the entire flow. Diddy wouldn't allow this!!! Tell the truth. Shoulda had Dawn or somebody on it matter of fact. Maybe? Hell Aubrey?? NOI might have a fit over it, lemme stop.
4. Kick, Push - The sample is infectious. I could listen to the track all day long and set my own personal cipher off sumthin propuuur.
5. I Gotcha - Another strong jawn. World play is on point. Yessir?
6. The Instrumental - Can you hear me booing from here? Cuz I am. The track is horrible. The chorus has me lookin like who done it.
7. He Say She Say - I should like this song. Its that 'real talk' after all. But the chorus is whack. The track is just 'blah'. The female vocalist at the end is the best thing about it. Why didn't they feature her more on this? Questions, questions.
8. Sunshine - Terrible.
9. Daydreamin - I love Jill Scott. Love you Jill. Love you. I 'get' what Lupe is talkin about. Okay. Some good quoteables. But the track is boring as shit. Love you Jill.
10. The Cool - Boring.
11. Hurt Me Soul - Back on the right path. Can't hate.
12. Pressure - This track sounds like the 'budget' was increased to accommodate 'that guy', ohhhhhhhh until the chorus hits and then I'm back to asking 'why' again. Might as well had put Bleek on the hook niggaz? Really. A lazy ass verse from dude and alrighty then.
13. American Terrorist - This track is kinda interesting. The guitar loop I'm feelin. The concept I'm feelin. The chorus…'ethnic' for the sake of being ethnic is just sad. Ruins the song IMO. Damn shame too. Shoulda had stic.man on the hook or some shit. THAT woulda set this shit off.
14. The Emperor's Soundtrack - I feel this. Even the singin. Kinda short.
15. Kick, Push II - I'm just waiting for Eminem to start spittin. Otherwise…eh.
6 outta 15. 7. Maybe 8 if I drink another beer.(probable)
So much potential.
The album didn't sell for more reasons than being leaked, or being pushed back, or poorly promoted, or a crazy ass 2nd single.
One of the 'best' albums of the year?? Depends on how long your list is. We can fight it out talk about that..
